India –A country with a proud past, a serious present

     India is a very colorful nation. I can say so with much confidence because I am an Indian who is well aware of its past and the present. We were the country who was once the spice hub of the world and the land of the golden bird (sone ki chidia). We are also the current land of the technologists and the aggressive economists. We are vivid, vivid with our culture and with our traditions. We wear many different dresses, follow many discrete religions, worship different idols and still we are united in a country called India. We devoured to be called as Hindustan as it would make us non-secular.  Our economy stood still as the qutub minar throughout the tough tide of the economic recession. And I swear this list will go on until I get tired of it.  Being content of my examples till now don’t you think we are colorful?

    Many foreigners survey India regularly, displaying the various aspects (food, culture, travel, etc) of present India and try to come up with an opinion. Some common current examples are Paul Merton, Ramsey, etc. But with all due respect I would say the job of evaluating my country lies solely in our hands. We are the people who are living the present India and our ancestors have lived in the past. And believe me this task will definitely lead us to a fruitful conclusion.

     So are we proud of our country or we are not? Well that is very trivial. But I can give you my view and it is “Yes, I am proud of India”. If you ask me a reason there are lots and all are accompanied with a bit of criticism.  

A country with a proud past  

Not many know what conclusion to make from India’s past. By past I would definitely refer to the independence struggle of colonial India. Whether India's past was all about the chaos or all about the suppression or all about the mutiny. If you ask me I will make it simple and pin-point. I will point towards the past of non-violence. India is among the very few country’s whose past is among those who haven’t done any harm to others. Don’t reiterate that a country under a foreign rule could not do harm to others. Yes, it could have. It could have proceeded with a mutiny and over throw the British, which obviously must involve killing and blood-shed of British people.  But we didn’t take that path. We were so very lucky to have a leader like Mahatma, who instead took a path of complete non-violence.

All this ideas of India’s glorious past didn’t come as I am a hardcore patriot who I am not but from an incident that happened to my dad and I had been recalling it. It goes like this:

My father was in America a few years back when on a lighter discussion they were somehow talking about India. Then my father’s American colleague said “It is a rare sight that a whole country is made independent solely by efforts based on non-violence”. He also did mention his own country had to go through a grievous civil war and much that followed before it.

Though what followed the independence was not much to be proud about. Yes I am speaking about the partition of India and Pakistan and the civil war that followed. But when we go down the pages of history we will really find that not much could have really been done for that. From what I have researched, it was a deadlock situation between Nehru and Jinnah. My opinion being that Jinnah was stubborn for the partition. Still before the partition all where Indian so the mistake of whoever politician it may be was a poor decision by an Indian.

I believe a clean past is much carried down by the younger generations of our country which makes us a peaceful country, this itself being a proud accomplishment.

A country with a serious present

The time in India is past soon and here we are in a modern developing India. It is a time with strong upward economic growth and globalization. But all is not well here right now.

We are beginning to be known as a country which lacks effort to accomplish its own demand. To meet this statement there is an oblivious incident of Mumbai attack. The government is still unable to do literally anything after the incident. The media personals propagated the agenda of reaction which by now had faded off, the government got tired of demanding Pakistan an answer and we people just got content that this is the most that can happen to us. By us I would definitely include me as it is me who after such a long term of the incident is merely thinking about it.

Somehow I am beginning to feel what Gandhi started as a popular and correct way to fight an unjust notion is being so wrongly adapted by us now. He never ever would have intended to mean “resisting” by non-violence. 

The serious problem here right now is very basic. We the people are not demanding our right back. We chose a politician but never question him what he provides us with, of which we are not content. We have even left dreaming of a nation which addresses all d basic needs of the human being. That being water, toilet, quality food, status of living and so on. All we do now is fear. We fear of a powerful politician who may do us or our loved ones harm for questioning him.  We fear that our loved ones may not come back when they out of their home, etc. In India we fear for our lives. This is one of the basic entities that India should ensure us or as we may say the people may ensure it.

How far will we succeed in developing the nation if we continue fearing of everything?

Well it is a very serious and grievous current situation that we are facing here in India.
