Farewell to Ubuntu's free CD shipping programme "ShipIt"
After delivering millions of Ubuntu CDs to millions of new users,
Ubuntu's ShipIt programme has finally run its course.
While Ubuntu can no longer deliver free CDs through the programme,
it’s still easy to get Ubuntu. You can download Ubuntu for free
from Ubuntu.com or you can buy a CD straight from the Canonical shop.
It is the first and only linux OS distributer to ship the latest CDs free
of cost to you and in any qty, though you need to have a reason for the qty.
No other linux distributer in my knowledge has been shipping for free,
though all free OS are free to download. This definitely led to the rise
and rise of ubuntu.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The ubuntu shipit programme had been sending me tons of new release
CDs which i(Asis Panda) have been generously distributing among
my community in my college at KIIT University.
Recalling the times of the last linux lab in my sophomore year,
in a class of class of around 100 students, 98 of them had
the latest ubuntu installed in them. The other two had Fedora.
:D such a vast majority of ubuntu users in a university IT dept.
makes me laugh somehow(I don't know why !).
May be because it had to do something with my love for ubuntu.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Today i sat wondering for a few minutes, while i was upgrading to
ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, that why on earth do i like ubuntu ?
They just support each version for a year on average and some are
just supported for 2 quaters !
Still...I like it so much...Heres why...
1. ubuntu supports whatever i connect to my laptop, without requiring
any drivers for it.
2. It is totally virus free.
3. ubuntu has a v.v.v.v.determined and dedicated community working
behind it.
That is why you find all possible softwares,
application and support on the click of a button.
4. And may be,finally, because ubuntu is free.
It has always seemed to me as the best of both worlds...
